A family mission statement is a written document which describes the goals and values of the family-in-business. Goals might address areas such as: perpetuation of the family business; vision and values; family relationships; and employment of family members. This document helps to guide strategic planning for the family business. When the process of developing or re-affirming the family misssion statement is a collaborative process, rather than being handed down by the leader, the family mission statement can help to build cohesiveness among family members. A family mission statement might also be known as a family charter. Quite often the family mission statement goes further as only the operational business. Also issues as a possible sale of the business at a certain moment can be addressed.
