What is Family Business Wiki all about?

Family Business Wiki is the "Wikipedia" and "LinkedIn" for family business -- a free family business resource built collaboratively. Anyone can create new articles or edit articles.

In addition to the Wiki encyclopedia articles, the Wiki also includes the Wiki's Town Square -- which has forums and discussions.

Steps for making additions or edits to the Wiki encyclopedia

1. You can either "join" the encyclopedia section of the Wiki (click on "Join this Space" located in the top left corner) or make edits without joining the Wiki. If you join the encyclopedia section of the Wiki, your name will be indicated at "Recent Changes" (located at top left corner) for any additions or edits which you make. If you choose to not join the encyclopedia section of the Wiki, only a series of numbers which are your internet identity will be indicated. While anyone can edit the Wiki, only those who have joined can create new pages.

2. If you want to edit a page, go to that page and click on "Edit this Page" in the upper right corner.

3. Edit just as you would edit any document.

4. Click on "Save" in the upper right corner when you are done.

5. To create a new page, you first need to join the encyclopedia section of the Wiki. Once you join, click on "New Page" in the upper left corner. Some find it convenient to first look at a similar page to: (a) see how it is titled, so that the new page can be titled in a similar manner, and (b) cut and paste the similar page to the new page, and then edit that page. This helps to maintain a consistent format.

6. Need help? Click on "help" in the upper right hand corner. Need more help? Contact info@familybusinesswiki.org .

Sections of an encyclopedia article

Table of Contents
  • Insert the Table of Contents by typing "toc" (without the quotation marks) enclosed in double brackets (brackets are on the keyboard just to the right of the "p" key).

Lead section/first paragraph
  • Summarizes the most important points of the article
  • Gives adequate explanation to provide context for greater level of detail in body of article
  • The subject is indicated in bold text in the first sentence
  • Some readers read only the first paragraph, so the most important information should be included in this paragraph.
Body sections
  • Body sections should have a heading in "Heading 3" font size
Optional sections
  • See also provides references to other articles in Family Business Wiki
  • Notes or Footnotes are citations or comments from the main text
  • References are books, websites, etc. referenced in the text
  • Further reading refers to useful background resources which are not cited in the text
  • External links includes internet links which are not used as sources for the text

Content and tone of encyclopedia articles

  • Article content should provide a family business perspective. For example, an article about "Key performance indicators" should describe how the selection and monitoring of key performance indicators might differ in a family-owned business when compared to a business which is not family-owned.
  • Family Business Wiki is not a place to advertise products or services or to enhance personal eminence. Only topics which are truly important or noteworthy will be included.
Tone and language
  • Write in a business-like tone -- like an encyclopedia or a business article
  • Be clear and concise -- avoiding irrelevant information or tangents
  • Assume the reader knows nothing about the subject
  • Do not use first person ("I" or "we") or second person ("you" or "your") perspectives.

Family Business Wiki Encyclopedia Content Policies follow exactly from Wikipedia

  • Wikipedia does not publish original thought: all material in Wikipedia must be attributable to a reliable, published source. Articles may not contain any new analysis or synthesis of published material that serves to advance a position not clearly advanced by the sources.
  • Neutral point of view: All Wikipedia articles and other encyclopedic content must be written from a neutral point of view (NPOV), representing fairly, and as far as possible without bias, all significant views that have been published by reliable sources. This is non-negotiable and expected of all articles, and of all article editors.
  • Verfiability: The threshold for inclusion in Wikipedia is verifiability, not truth—that is, whether readers are able to check that material added to Wikipedia has already been published by a reliable source, not whether we think it is true. Editors should provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, or the material may be removed.
  • No original research: Wikipedia does not publish original research or original thought. This includes unpublished facts, arguments, speculation, and ideas; and any unpublished analysis or synthesis of published material that serves to advance a position. This means that Wikipedia is not the place to publish your own opinions, experiences, or arguments. Citing sources and avoiding original research are inextricably linked: to demonstrate that you are not presenting original research, you must cite reliable sources that are directly related to the topic of the article, and that directly support the information as it is presented.

Family Business Wiki's Town Square

  • Blogs and discussions in online groups and forums are quite different from an encyclopedia article or a magazine article. This type of writing is generally: shorter, more informal, easy to read, often written from the first person (I or me), thought provoking -- and lends itself to comments/conversation from people with similar (or dissimilar!) perspectives.

  • Only those who have joined the Family Business Wiki Town Square can contribute to the Town Square. Joining the Wiki encyclopedia and joining the Wiki Town Square are two separate processes, i.e., you need to join each separately.

Is English not your first language?

  • To read Family Business Wiki in other languages, simply use the Google Translator located at the bottom of the navigation column on the left side of the screen, or click on the appropriate flag in the right column of the Wiki Town Square.
  • To write articles in other languages, first write the article at Google Translate, then translate it into English, and then cut and paste the English version into Family Business Wiki.
